Botox
The number one cosmetic treatment in the country , Botox® is a non-surgical procedure that offers men and women a more youthful-looking appearance without the need for surgery. It provides temporary improvement to several problem areas of the face, including crow’s feet (small wrinkles radiating from the outer corner of the eye), frown lines (vertical lines between the eyes), and forehead furrows.
Botox® is a purified protein derivative of botulinum toxin type A. The injections release a chemical called acetylcholine, which trigger muscle contractions that create wrinkles. Unlike dermal fillers, such as Radiance®, Sculptra®, Restylane®, and Hylaform®, Botox® is designed to block muscle movement and prevent wrinkles from forming.
Fillers are meant to “fill in” various lines, wrinkles, and folds by adding volume. Dr. Powers, a qualified facial injectables specialist, safely administers Botox® injections by using a very thin needle to inject tiny amounts of Botox into specific, wrinkle-producing muscles while preserving the patient’s natural facial expressions. Botox® injection are not considered painful; however, to help ease any discomfort, a local anesthetic may be administered. Depending on your cosmetic goals and Dr. Powers’ recommendation, you may be able to combine Botox® and dermal filler injections for an overall younger, rejuvenated appearance.
Each treatment takes about 10 to 15 minutes, depending on how many areas are receiving injections. There is no downtime following Botox injections, so you are able to return to your normal activities immediately after the procedure. Because results typically last for about three to four months, follow-up treatment sessions may be necessary.
Although rare, the side effects and complications associated with Botox® include: bruising and pain at the injection site, headaches, redness, nausea, flu-like symptoms, and temporary facial weakness or drooping. The most uncommon complication that could develop following Botox® injections: the botulinum toxin spreading beyond the treated area(s), causing certain botulism-like signs and symptoms, including breathing problems, difficulty swallowing, muscle weakness, and slurred speech.
